So what exactly is digital storytelling? According to the Educause Learning Initiative digital storytelling is the practice of combining narrative with digital content, including images, sound, and video, to create a short movie, typically with a strong emotional component. Digital stories can be instructional, persuasive, historical, or reflective. The resources available to incorporate into a digital story are virtually limitless, giving the storyteller enormous creative latitude.
An area of research that recently piqued my interested was an article presented by Triple j’s Hack about how young people experience stress from being constantly connected. This is why I have decided to focus on mobile phone usage and why youth create stress from the fear of missing out (FOMO). According to Nick Couldry, I will be exercising an experimental “story circle”, as I will be listening and researching stories given to me by various participants. This information will be presented digitally and published on YouTube and WordPress.
Triple j’s Hack article states that just over half of 18-31 year olds have experienced “technology stress” from being constantly connected to their place of work or their job. For example, smartphones make it easier for your boss to email you even when you’re not at work, and social media means you can monitor developments in your sector at any time of the day or night.
“It’s like multitasking on steroids… People don’t want to, or don’t know how to, disconnect. We have a digital distraction epidemic.”
I for one definitely suffer from technology stress, so much so that I will never have my phone on silent in fear of missing out on important information. By conducting this research into technology stress I hope to bring awareness too the situation in a creative and entertaining digital format.
What do I want people to know about:
I want the audience to understand and be able to reflect on their mobile phone usages and their abilities to disconnect. I hope to inform people of the technology stress and research participant mobile habits.
This project will be individually conducted and created on the platform of YouTube and WordPress. Although, I will be collaborating with my participants by interviewing them and retrieving their experiences and knowledge in order to produce my content.
Digital Platform Presentation:
The project will be presented in a series of YouTube interviews in conjunction with reflective text that will be posted on WordPress. YouTube is an entertaining platform that will visually engage with an audience and WordPress will create reach to an interested audience through the use of embedded Hashtags.
